The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam occurring in the area. Authorities say the subject has been representing himself as a law enforcement officer, contacting victims by phone and advising them that there is either an unpaid citation or warrants for their arrest. The subject then informs the victims that the citation can be dropped or the warrant will be removed by providing credit card information.

It’s happening again. A telephone scam in which the caller says he represents the IRS is once again being worked in the area. A Como resident reports two automated phone calls requesting a return call to a specific 800 number to arrange payment to the IRS for money owed. The calls stated that the individual was in severe trouble with the IRS. The resident did not return the call.

Central Maine Power has issued a warning to customers about phone scams involving people who are posing as utility company employees. According to the company, scammers threaten to cut electricity services unless the customer makes an immediate payment over the phone using a prepaid debit card.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a call where the suspect tells the resident they owe money to the IRS and that if they don’t pay, the Spring Lake Police will come and arrest them. The phone number shows as being from the Spring Lake branch of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Currently, these unsolicited calls are placed by criminals who claim to be representatives of the FBI or other government agency and make demands for money. Several call recipients stated that Caller ID information falsely displayed the call as originating from an FBI office and the caller told the victim to check the Internet to verify the number.
